‘Hang Him’: Wife Accuses Tripura Cop Of Poisoning Daughter As He Didn’t Want Second Girl

A three-year-old girl died after her father, a policeman from Tripura, allegedly poisoned her over being unhappy about having a second daughter. Demanding the strictest action, his wife has accused him of foul play and of mistreating both their daughters.
According to the police, the incident took place late on August 8 in North Tripura’s Behala Bari area in Dharmanagar. Police identified the accused as Rathindra Debbarma of the Tripura State Rifles, who was stationed at the ADC Khumulwng headquarters. The child was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was declared dead, the police said.
Police said Debbarma took his daughter to a shop on the evening of August 8, promising her biscuits and, on their way back, asked her to drink from a bottle he was carrying. They said the girl resisted but he forced her to consume the liquid inside the bottle, which was laced with poison. He brought her home and left and, soon, the child started vomiting, they added.
They said the mother, identified as Mitali Debbarma, suspected something was amiss and confronted her husband. She found out that he had poisoned the girl, they added.
“A few days ago, we visited my sister’s house. While I was at the neighbour’s house with my sister, he took our daughter to get biscuits. When I returned home, I found her vomiting. We rushed her to the hospital, but the doctors directly sent her to the morgue,” Mitali said.
“My husband was unhappy because we don’t have a son. We have two daughters, and she was the younger one. He always said a girl child is useless and often mistreated our daughters,” she said. “I hope the government takes stern action and hangs him.”
