Khadi, a fabric that has long been the symbol of resilience, self-reliance and versatility, has historically found itself being classified as ‘niche,’ something adorned by people subscribing to a particular ideology. However, the Pearl Academy exhibit at the Lakme Fashion Week proved that the cloth, known for its versatility, is no longer bound to the walls of handloom stores, from silhouettes to shoes.

Khadi has quietly been stepping back into the limelight, and here are three celebrity looks to prove it.

1. Genelia D’Souza

In July, Genelia made heads turn as she wore a khadi Jamdani lehenga from Gaurang Shah’s Rang Raas collection as she promoted her movie, Junior. The outfit took over 18 months to craft, it featured floral Jamdani motifs, and the actress styled it with heirloom jewellery –paying homage to her roots.

2. Priyanka Chopra

The OG desi girl Priyanka Chopra has time and again flaunted some of the best fits, and her Khadi saree was no exception. At National Handloom Day 2025, she wore a custom masterpiece – a vintage Banarasi brocade saree with silver threads and gold electroplating on khadi silk, reworked into a structured, jewel‑toned sari with a thigh‑high slit.

3. Sonam Kapoor

Sonam Kapoor made quite a statement at Abu Jani & Sandeep Khosla’s Diwali party as the actress adorned a crushed khadi lehenga with a gold gota‑patti border. Instead of the same old blouse, she opted for a corset‑top made from Karnataka red soil and Multani clay, proving that sustainability and serving looks go hand in hand!

While each thread of Khadi embodies India’s story, up until a few years ago, the cloth’s presence was more dominant in history books rather than our wardrobes, but as conscious fashion choices take the lead it’s evident that Khadi has been rediscovered and paved its way into the fashion spotlight, proving once and for all that style and sustainability could always co-exist.
