‘I Was Already Expecting…’: Ruben Amorim On Being Linked With Manchester United Job – News18
Last Updated:
Ruben Amorim has been on the radars of several clubs including Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City.
A vacancy has opened at Manchester United following the sacking of Erik Ten Hag. The Dutchman was removed from the role of the head coach after the Red Devils suffered a 1-2 defeat to West Ham United on Sunday. Ruud van Nistelrooy has now taken over the charge as the interim manager with the club looking for a permanent replacement.
Amidst this, Ruben Amorim has emerged as a top contender to become the next Manchester United boss. The Sporting CP coach addressed the topic during a recent press conference.
The United hierarchy approached Amorim just hours after Ten Hag was given his marching orders, reported The Athletic. The outlet claimed that both parties had held talks to discuss the offer and Amorim “verbally agreed” to it.
Amorim, however, chose to remain tight-lipped when asked about the development. “I was already expecting this question and obviously I’m not going to talk about the future, because otherwise, I’ll always have to comment. I’m very proud to be Sporting coach, that’s all,” the 39-year-old said ahead of Sporting’s Taca da Liga quarter-final match against Nacional.
Amorim has already proved his calibre as a manager at Sporting. Under his guidance, the Portuguese outfit has secured 170 wins in 237 matches. He took over the helm in 2020.
His team currently leads the Primeira Liga and are three points clear of second-placed Porto after nine matches.
Amorim’s side has been unbeaten in the Champions League this season. Sporting have defeated LOSC Lille and SK Sturm Graz by two goals while playing out a 1-1 draw with PSV Eindhoven. He has become the league champion two times and has won two cups as the Sporting manager.
Amirom was heavily linked with a move to Anfield before Arne Slot was appointed as the successor to Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.
Chelsea also held talks with the Portuguese coach earlier this year before the arrival of Enzo Maresca. Manchester City reportedly sees Amirom as a good replacement for Pep Guardiola who may leave the club next summer.
