Airlines have been directed to maintain discipline in fare-setting, keeping prices fair, transparent and in line with market conditions.

Indian air travellers should brace for higher ticket prices as the government lifts its months-long cap on domestic airfares from March 23- a move that hands airlines back the freedom to price flights as they see fit. The Ministry of Civil Aviation had imposed route-wise fare ceilings in December 2025, after a wave of IndiGo flight disruptions sent ticket prices soaring and left passengers scrambling for alternatives. The caps were a direct shield for travellers caught in that chaos, preventing airlines from charging beyond a set limit on each route.

Will Ticket Prices Go Up?

Almost certainly, yes. The fare ceiling that kept prices in check through the holiday and wedding season disappears overnight. Carriers including IndiGo, Air India and SpiceJet will now be free to price dynamically. Fares on busy routes and during peak periods could climb sharply and last-minute bookings are likely to feel the pinch most.

Is Government Stepping Aside Entirely From Pricing?

Not quite. The government has tried to soften the impact with a warning rather than a rule. Airlines have been directed to keep pricing “fair, transparent and in line with market conditions” and the ministry has said it will continue monitoring fares closely. It has also left the door open to reimposing controls “in public interest” if airlines overreach.

Why Has Government Lifted Cap Now?

The Federation of Indian Airlines- representing IndiGo, Air India and SpiceJet- wrote to the government earlier this month warning that continued caps were driving carriers toward financial distress. Soaring jet fuel costs, partly driven by the ongoing Iran war, had compounded the pressure. The federation warned that some operators could face threats to their “continued viability” if the situation persisted.
