The fishermen usually used traditional boats to do fishing.

Yesterday, sardine fish were sold at Rs 9 each and Rs 150 per kg while mackerel fish were sold at Rs 250 per kg.

The intensity of rain in the coastal areas of India has slightly reduced though some regions are still experiencing heavy rainfall. With the decrease in rainfall, the water level in the Arabian Sea has also gone down significantly. Due to earlier heavy rains, the Karnataka government had ordered fishermen to refrain from going to sea. Recently, however, they have been given the green light to resume their activities. Let’s delve into the current fishing season.

Fishing employs thousands of men and women in Karnataka. Traditionally, these fishermen use boats to navigate and fish in the sea. According to reports, this year, the fishermen are predominantly catching Sardine fish. Last year, the fishermen had a bountiful catch of Mackerel fish, but this season, Sardine is the primary catch.

The fish caught by these fishermen are sold at Panambur Beach near Mangalore. This fish market operates all day, attracting buyers from various parts of the state who come to purchase freshly caught fish.

The buying and selling process in this market is fascinating. Upon arrival at the market, the fishermen participate in a large auction organized by sellers. Most sellers in this market are wholesalers. Small fish vendors, who sell in local markets, visit Panambur Beach to stock up on fish. They take part in the auction, and the highest bidder secures the catch.

The auction process determines the price of fish, which fluctuates based on time and customer demand. For instance, yesterday, Sardine fish were sold at Rs 9 each and Rs 150 per kg, while Mackerel fish were sold at Rs 250 per kg.

Fishing is a vital industry for the coastal regions of Karnataka, providing livelihoods for many and fresh seafood for consumers. The traditional methods of fishing and the lively auctioning process at Panambur Beach highlight the community’s reliance on and relationship with the sea. Despite the challenges posed by the monsoon rains, the resilience and adaptability of the fishermen ensure the continued availability of fresh fish in the market. This season’s focus on Sardine fish demonstrates the dynamic nature of the fishing industry, where each year can bring different outcomes and opportunities.
