In Uttar Pradesh’s Budaun district, four women were arrested for “failing to instil good values” in their young sons, who allegedly harassed a girl from another community. The mothers were detained under preventive arrest sections after it was reported that the boys, all under the age of 13, had passed lewd remarks and harassed the girl on her way to and from school.
Ajay Pal Singh, the Station House Officer (SHO) of the respective police station, told The Indian Express that an FIR was filed under sections of the BNS and POCSO Act following the parents’ complaint.
He explained that the boys, belonging to a minority community, are under the age of 13, which prompted the authorities to serve notices to their parents and subsequently arrest the mothers.
SHO further reasoned why the mothers were arrested and told the publication that these four boys are “ill-mannered” and involved in “notorious activities.” He added that the mothers are detained “to send a message and teach a lesson to such parents for not imparting good values and ensuring a better upbringing of their children, leading to such offences.”
Singh also mentioned that the fathers of the boys, who are employed outside Uttar Pradesh, would be arrested upon their return. The teenage girl had reportedly been harassed by the boys for several days.
The mothers were released after they submitted personal bonds before the sub-divisional magistrate court on the same day of their arrest.
