About the Author:

Nishad Narayanan is a man whose life flows gently between two rivers—Nature and Music. Born and raised in the green hills of Kerala, he carries within him the scent of wildflowers, the hush of forests, and the echoes of songs once played on dusty cassette tapes. A graduate in Botany from CMS College, Kottayam, his early years were shaped as much by the plants he studied as by the poetry he admired. During his student days, he was an active member—and later, secretary—of the college’s Nature Club, where his love for the environment found wings. But even before his journey into environmental science began, Malayalam poetry had already found a home in him. It was his beloved teachers, Dr. Cheravally Shasi and Dr. Babu Cherian, who held his hand and led him to the world of verses and metaphors, nurturing in him a deep reverence for language, beauty, and emotion. Later, he completed his Master’s in Environmental Sciences from the School of Environmental Sciences at Mahatma Gandhi University, securing second rank at the university level. He also became the founding editor of Avani, the environmental magazine published by the same school. For over 25 years now, Nishad has worked as an environmental expert with numerous national and international agencies. His dedication to environmental auditing, sustainable development and environmental stewardship has made a quiet, lasting impact on many projects across the country. But parallel to his professional life, another current was always flowing—his enduring passion for music. A significant turning point came when he began engaging with the legendary music director Jerry Amaldev. Their conversations ignited in him the desire to look beyond the notes and into the soul of songs. That inspiration would later blossom into his earlier book on Malayalam film music title as “Paattinte Porul”. Today, Nishad lives in Amballur, Thrissur, with his life partner Nirmala and their two sons, Sayanth and Saketh. Together, they share a home filled with songs, greenery, and the small joys that make life worth remembering. This book, Scars and Songs, is perhaps his most personal work yet. It is a tender and haunting journey through illness, loss, friendship, memory, and grace. Each chapter is drawn from lived experience—either his own or through deeply empathetic eyes—and each story is stitched with the golden thread of meaning. In these pages, you will walk through hospitals and childhood forests, you will hear lullabies and silence, and above all, you will feel. If you’ve ever watched someone you love grow old, if you’ve waited outside an operation theatre, if you’ve held a friend’s hand for the last time, or found yourself staring at a song that won’t leave you—this book is for you.

Exclusive interview with the author

Q: What Inspired You To Write This Book?

A: This book was born out of deeply personal experiences—illness, loss, resilience, and the quiet strength of family and friendships. During my recovery from COVID, I found myself reflecting on life’s fragility and its hidden grace. Writing became a way to transform scars into songs—turning pain into reflection, and reflection into hope.

Q: Can You Tell Us About The Book?

A: Scars and Songs is a memoir woven with reflections on illness, loss, love, and grace. It blends real-life incidents with philosophical musings, drawing on the language of nature and Indian spirituality. It is both a personal journey and an invitation for readers to pause, reflect, and rediscover resilience in their own lives.

Q: What Does The Title Mean?

A: The title reflects the dual journey of life: scars as reminders of wounds, struggles, and survival, and songs as the melodies of hope, love, and resilience that follow. Every scar carries a story, and every song carries a prayer. Together, they tell the story of what it means to be human.

Q: What Did You Learn When Writing The Book?

A: I learned that writing is not just about recording events, but about listening—listening to silence, to memory, to pain, and to hope. The act of writing taught me that healing begins when we give words to what we often hide, and that our deepest wounds can open doors to compassion.

Q: Where Do You Get Your Information Or Ideas For Your Books?

A: From lived experience: fieldwork as an environmental professional, hospital corridors, train journeys, village visits, and long conversations. I cross-check medical and procedural details with professionals and keep notebooks for images, phrases, and questions.

Q: Do You Have Any Suggestions To Help Others To Become A Better Writer? If So, What Are They?

A: Write honestly and regularly. Read beyond your comfort zone. Keep a small notebook. Revise more than you think necessary. Read your work aloud for clarity and rhythm. Protect quiet time.

Q: What Is The Most Difficult Part About Writing For You?

A: Re-entering painful memories without dramatizing them. Also, knowing where to end a chapter—leaving space for the reader’s breath.

Q: What Does Success Mean To You? What Is The Definition Of Success?

A: A message from a reader who feels less alone. A page that helps someone sit gently with their own life. If a book can be a companion, that is success.

Q: Where Do You Get Your Greatest Ideas For Writing?

A: From the unnoticed: a nurse’s hand adjusting a blanket, a stranger on a train, a village evening, a line of a song, rain on laterite soil. Ordinary moments carry luminous weight.

Q: What Advice Would You Give To Aspiring Authors?

A: Begin with what breaks your heart—or what keeps it tender. Write the truest sentence you can today. Return tomorrow. Trust revision. Respect your reader. And let compassion guide your craft.
