Norwegian GM Magnus Carlsen leads the Norway Chess 2025 standings at the conclusion of Round 5 of the event on Sunday. Carlsen picked up a hard-fought draw against American GM Fabiano Caruana after triumphing his Armageddon game to extend his lead at the top.

Indian Arjun Erigaisi, who also posted a win in the Armageddon games to pick up an extra point, played out a draw with American Hikaru Nakamura, while the youngest World Champion D Gukesh played out a testing draw against Wei Yi.

The Norway Chess Women’s tournament also saw an exciting day with Vaishali Rameshbabu achieving a decisive win against Sarasadat Khademalsharieh, marking her first classical victory in this year’s edition of Norway Chess.

The other two games, Anna Muzychuk against World Champion Wenjun Ju, and Humpy Koneru against Lei Tingjie, were decided in Armageddon, highlighting the intense competition in the women’s field where every point is crucial.

Wenjun Ju and Humpy Koneru won their respective Armageddon games, earning the important extra points.

Earlier, Carlsen showcased his prowess with an instructive victory in the endgame against Indian No. 2 Arjun Erigaisi. Despite losing two Armageddon games in the previous rounds, the Norwegian superstar made a strong statement with this win on home turf.

In the match between World Champion Dommaraju Gukesh and World No. 3 Fabiano Caruana, the American player led for most of the game with significant winning chances. However, he was unable to convert his advantage due to Gukesh’s excellent defensive skills. Gukesh then convincingly won the Armageddon game.

Norway Chess is one of the world’s premier chess tournaments, bringing together top male and female players in a distinctive 6-player double round-robin format. The 2025 edition runs from May 26 to June 6.
