Exclusive interview with the author

Q: What Inspired You To Write This Book?

A: This book draws inspiration from “safai karamchari andolan” and Bezwada Wilson’s advocacy and his immense efforts for septic cleaners, aiming to amplify their voices and spur conversations about social injustice and change.

Q: Was The Character Inspired By A Real Person?

A:The character is inspired by the life of the countless Dalits who endure the weight of societal injustice, forced to conceal their identity and navigate a world rife with discrimination. Through the lens of various short-short stories, the character’s journey unfolds, revealing the profound difficulties and injustices inflicted upon them solely because of their caste.

Q: Can You Tell Us About The Book?

A: This is a story that blends romance and social commentary, touching on several important themes. It explores how society treats people differently based on their surname, especially concerning caste. It also delves into the conflict between what we feel inside and how we act outwardly, as well as the challenges faced by Dalit community members working as septic cleaners. Lastly, it questions why certain communities are marginalized due to their caste and profession. Overall, the story weaves together various narratives to create a compelling and thought-provoking journey.

Q: What Does The Title Mean?

A:”It is a socio-romantic novel. Its title expresses how society gives so much importance to someone’s surname and treats them differently based on their surname, especially concerning caste. It also delves into the conflict between what we feel inside and how we act outwardly, as well as the challenges faced by Dalit community members working as septic cleaners.”

Q: What Do You Think Happened To The Characters After The Book Ended?

A: The identities of the characters in this story remain undisclosed for now. Subsequently, the novel will gradually unveil the journeys and experiences of each character, allowing readers to delve deeper into their individual narratives. As the story unfolds across multiple installments, readers will have the opportunity to accompany these characters on their respective journeys, exploring the intricacies of their lives and the challenges they encounter along the way. Stay tuned for the unfolding saga that will illuminate the paths of these intriguing characters in my novel “What’s your surname?”

Q: How Long Does It Take You To Write A Book?

A: It took 3 years of dedicated effort and extensive research into myriad articles and real-life accounts. Each page of the narrative was meticulously shaped by the wealth of information gleaned from these sources, allowing for a nuanced exploration of the societal injustices faced by the characters, particularly those from the Dalit community. From delving into the complexities of caste-based discrimination to unearthing the profound struggles of marginalized individuals, every aspect of the book’s context was painstakingly crafted to resonate with authenticity and relevance. The culmination of these efforts is a narrative that not only captures the essence of real-world experiences but also invites readers to confront and contemplate the pressing issues at its heart.

Q: Where Do You Get Your Information Or Ideas For Your Books?

A: “As a social worker, I have participated in numerous government-based NGO programs and projects across Rajasthan. During my time working in rural and underprivileged areas of the country, particularly in Rajasthan, I have witnessed the harsh realities of caste discrimination. Secondly, the genesis of this book also stems from the profound impact of Bezwada Wilson’s advocacy and the tireless movements he spearheaded. Inspired by his courageous efforts to combat caste-based discrimination and uplift marginalized communities, the narrative unfolds as a testament to the resilience and struggles faced by those fighting against societal injustices.”

Q: Do You Try More To Be Original Or To Deliver To Readers What They Want?

A: I strive to create something that blends both aspects because they are equally important. I aim to infuse fresh perspectives, imaginative twists, and innovative storytelling techniques to craft an immersive experience that distinguishes my work from the rest.

Q: What Is The Most Difficult Part About Writing For You?

A: Coming from a Brahmin family, I acknowledge that I’ve lived a privileged life in terms of caste. Hence, connecting my thoughts at a deeper level with the concept of the novel proved to be a challenging task. Honestly speaking, I’ve never experienced any form of discrimination based on caste. Collecting articles and experiences from people who have faced such discrimination was particularly challenging. Then, there was the process of translating abstract ideas and emotions into coherent, impactful prose. This required careful consideration of language, structure, and tone to convey the full depth and nuance of thoughts. Additionally, grappling with self-doubt and a lack of perfectionism hindered progress at times. Despite these challenges, navigating the creative journey and overcoming obstacles ultimately lead to growth and fulfillment as a writer.

Q: What Does Success Mean To You? What Is The Definition Of Success?

A: Success, to me, is multifaceted and deeply personal. It encompasses achieving goals, both big and small, that are meaningful and aligned with one’s values and aspirations. Beyond external markers like wealth or recognition, true success lies in fulfillment, growth, and making a positive impact in the lives of others. It’s about finding balance, purpose, and joy in what you do, while continually striving to become the best version of yourself. Ultimately, success is a journey rather than a destination, defined by the pursuit of excellence, resilience in the face of challenges, and the ability to find meaning and satisfaction in every endeavor.

Q: How Important Is Research To You When Writing A Book?

A: Research is invaluable to me when writing a book, as it forms the bedrock upon which the narrative is built. Whether delving into historical events, exploring scientific concepts, or diving deep into the intricacies of human behavior, thorough research ensures accuracy, authenticity, and depth in my writing. It allows me to create a richly textured and immersive world that resonates with readers, while also enhancing the credibility and believability of the story. Additionally, research often serves as a source of inspiration, sparking new ideas and uncovering unexpected insights that enrich the narrative. In essence, research is not just a means to an end but an integral part of the creative process, enabling me to craft compelling stories that are grounded in truth and resonate with readers on a profound level.

Q: Where Do You Get Your Greatest Ideas For Writing?

A: My greatest ideas for writing often emerge from a combination of sources and experiences. Whether it’s from observing the world around me, delving into personal reflections, or exploring topics that fascinate me, inspiration can strike from unexpected places. Engaging with diverse perspectives, immersing myself in literature and art, and even moments of quiet contemplation all contribute to the creative process. Ultimately, it’s the intersection of curiosity, passion, and introspection that fuels my imagination and sparks ideas worth exploring in my writing.

Q: What Advice Would You Give To Aspiring Authors?

A: To aspiring authors: Write consistently, read widely, embrace feedback, and stay persistent. Find your unique voice, never stop learning, and believe in the value of your stories. Remember, writing is a journey, so trust in your creativity and persevere on the path to success.
