Star Indian men’s doubles shuttlers Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty were beaten in straight games by Indonesia’s Muhammad Rian Ardianto and Rahmat Hidayat, as the defending champions’ campaign suffered an early ending, in the opening round of the French Open.
Having beaten Ardianto and Hidayat in a three-game thriller in the quarterfinals of the Denmark Open last week, Satwik-Chirag would have known that the opening round encounter wouldn’t be easy and the Indonesian duo came up all guns blazing.
None of the pairs gave each other a lot of ground to play with and were mostly at each other’s necks, and Ardianto and Hidayat kept their nerves to win the first game 21-18. T
Satwik-Chirag looked to put up a better show in the second and, after close exchanges, had a game point at 20-19. But the Indonesian pair showed up when it mattered and grabbed three of the next four points to win it 22-20 and win the match in two games.
At match point, a return from Shetty went wide, handing the game to the Indonesians. They will now take on compatriots Sabar Karyaman Gutama and Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani in the second round.
This first-round exit is Satwik-Chirag’s worst show this year, with the duo coming on the back of a semifinal finish at last week’s Denmark Open.
Earlier in the day, Ayush Shetty lost a close encounter against Japan’s Koki Watanabe 21-19, 21-19. Anupama Upadhyaya lost 15-21, 11-21 to fourth seed and China Masters runner-up Han Yue.
Unnati Hooda put up a spirited show as she lost the first game 11-21 to Malaysia’s Karupathevan Letshanaa but came back stronger to win the next two 21-13, 21-16 to move into the second round. She will next take on the second seed, Wang Zhi Yi.
Anmol Kharb lost 15-21, 9-21 to the top seed and Denmark Open champion An Se Young. Kavipriya Selvam and Simran Singhi beat compatriots Rutuparna and Swetaparna Panda 21-9, 21-11.
Pruthvi Krishnamurthy Roy and Sai Pratheek lost 18-21, 13-21 to the Malaysian duo of Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi.
