Sunil Narine Wins IPL 2024 MVP Award, Says ‘Couldn’t Have Asked for a Better Birthday Gift’ as KKR Lift 3rd Title – News18

Sunil Narine won the Most Valuable Player award of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season thanks to brilliant exploits with bat and ball – scoring 488 runs and picking up 17 wickets. The star-allrounder was instrumental as Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) clinched their third IPL trophy.

Narine said that coming to the ground for the IPL 2024 final brought back memories of 2012 for him as the feeling overwhelmed him. He added that it is the best birthday gift.

“Coming into the ground today, it felt like 2012. The feeling is overwhelming and I couldn’t have asked for a better birthday gift,” Sunil Narine said after receiving the MVP award.

Narine said that he is enjoying his cricket and it helps when the team is winning.

“I am enjoying my cricket at the moment – batting, bowling and fielding. What helps is when the team is winning,” he said.

On his batting, Narine said that getting the role of just going out there and expressing himself helped as he credited Gautam Gambhir for giving him confidence. He also lauded his opening partners Phil Salt and Rahmanullah Gurbaz.

“Getting the role to just go out there and express myself, getting the team off to a flyer, the support from GG – that was very good. Salty played an incredible season. We missed him but Gurbaz came in and filled the role. Once you have an opening partner with the same intent, it’s good for the team,” Narine said.

As for the bowling department, Narine called Varun Chakaravarthy a world-class bowler and it is his work off the field that has helped him and as a bowling unit. He credited the pacers for picking up wickets early, that made his job easier in the middle.

“We always pick early wickets, when we come to bowl, we bowl with less pressure. As a total bowling unit, picking up wickets is key and it helped us win the title,” Narine said.
