Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah is more than just a show for most of us. Starting in 2008, the unique antics of Jethalal, Madhavi, Daya and Tapu kept the audience engaged. During a recent interview, Jheel Mehta, who played the role of Sonu, opened up on how she bagged her part in the popular show, how it changed her life and why she eventually quit the television world to become a businesswoman.
During a conversation with Times Of India, Jheel revealed she was only 10 years old when her mother told her that a new show was coming up on Sab TV called TMKOC. Having acted before, her mother asked, ‘Action dogi vapis’(Will you audition again?) The suggestion changed her life. She went for the audition and easily bagged the part. Soon, she became a household name, and the audience found her relatable. She even recalled how the cast became her family and people started approaching her for pictures.
Looking back at the fun she had on TKOC sets, she mentioned that there were many unforgettable memories. One such was the dahi handi episode where she broke the handi with Tapu Sena’s support. Another was the time she missed her school trip on her birthday because of the show. The entire set was turned into a celebration that she would never forget.
Highlighting why she quit the show in 2012 despite it being so popular, she noted that she wanted to focus on her board exams and while it was a difficult decision, she needed it for her future. “All good things must come to an end,” noted Jheel.
Revealing a turning point in her life, Jheel mentioned that she was a part of advertisements until 2019. However, her father suffered a heart attack which motivated her to leave the entertainment industry and take up her father’s business.
Looking back at her TMKOC stint, she still gets surprised at the kind of impact it has left. Jheel said how even after 12 years, people identify her as Sonu. Recalling the reaction of an Indian family on an overseas trip, she remembered how they excitedly exclaimed, ‘Areh! Humari Sonu yaha kya kar rahi hai?’’ “It is surprising how sirf ek character play karne se, main pure India ke bachpan ka hissa ban gayi. Isse zyada blessing kya ho sakti hai kisi actor ke liye?”, Jheel added. (It is surprising how I became a part of India’s childhood with a character. What can be a bigger blessing than this for an actor?)
