This Actor, And Not Rajesh Khanna, Was First Offered Lead Role In Anand – News18
Anand is regarded as one of the greatest Hindi films ever.
The actor did not find Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s script appealing, hence rejected it.
The Kapoor family stands as an iconic dynasty in the world of Indian cinema, having contributed superstars to nearly every generation since the days of Prithvi Raj Kapoor. Shashi Kapoor, who came from the same family, was a widely recognised figure. Reports suggest that he declined roles in films that later achieved superhit status. Notably, one such film is the timeless cult classic, Anand.
During the inception of Anand, director Hrishikesh Mukherjee initially envisioned Raj Kapoor as the lead. However, Raj Kapoor, although captivated by the script, had to decline due to health concerns, and the director was understanding of his situation.
Subsequently, Hrishikesh Mukherjee considered Shashi Kapoor for the role. Shashi Kapoor, after perusing the script, did not find it particularly appealing and turned down the offer. It was at this juncture that Rajesh Khanna, the reigning superstar of the era, entered the picture.
Rajesh Khanna expressed his enthusiasm for the script and agreed to take on the lead role in Anand. This marked a pivotal moment as it brought together two legendary actors, Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan, for the first time on screen. Amitabh Bachchan played a supporting role in the film, setting the stage for a memorable cinematic collaboration.
Anand graced the silver screen on March 12, 1971, with Hrishikesh Mukherjee at the helm of direction. The film’s ensemble cast included Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, Sumita Sanyal, and Ramesh Deo. Hrishikesh Mukherjee and NC Sippy served as the producers, while the music was composed by Salil Chowdhury. Renowned lyricist Gulzar not only contributed to the film’s dialogues but also co-wrote the script.
Anand is regarded as one of the greatest Hindi films ever. At the Venice Film Festival in 1971, Rajesh Khanna was given a special award in the best actor category.
