Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagenthran was detained by the police on Thursday while attempting to climb the Thirupparankundram hill to light the traditional Karthigai Deepam oil lamp. He was accompanied by several Hindutva activists, including the petitioner Rama Ravikumar.

Police officials said they had clearly informed Nagenthran and the others that they would not be allowed to go up the hill. Authorities also told them that the state government was preparing to file an appeal against the High Court’s order permitting the lamp-lighting ceremony.

When Nagenthran and the group refused to disperse, police placed them in a van and moved them away from the road leading to the hilltop, which is close to the Thirupparankundram temple. Those detained included members of the Hindu Munnani. The petitioner, however, left after arguing with the police.
