England players’ gesture to console the heartbroken Mohammed Siraj after India’s defeat at Lord’s in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy has drawn adulation and respect from fans in the sub-continent.

Siraj, India’s number 11 in the final day chase of 193 runs, batted bravely for 29 balls, despite battling a mid-knock injury, scoring four runs to support the well-set Ravindra Jadeja on the other end. Their partnership lasted over 13 overs, bringing India tantalisingly close to a historic win, but faltered in the 75th over.

Given the strike for the last three balls against Shoaib Bashir, he played out the fourth. On the fifth, he middled a good backfoot defense, but the ball rolled off his blade to the ground and trickled over to the base of the stumps, gently pushing off the bails. The Indian pacer, known for wearing his heart on his sleeve, couldn’t believe it and sat down inconsolably as the England players ran off in celebration.

Soon, Joe Root, Zak Crawley and Harry Brook broke away from the celebrations to console the Indian and others followed, shaking his hand and sharing hugs. Fans in India lauded them for upholding the ‘spirit of cricket’.

Check some of the reactions here:

Siraj was on the face of most of the English bowlers, in a show of his passion and love for the sport and the team. He barged shoulders with Ben Duckett, sledged Zak Crawley, teased Ben Stokes, and even stared at the umpires. But, as Nasser Hussain and others pointed out after his key wickets across the match, he was a player that every captain would love to have on their side because of the sheer will to take a bullet for the team.

With the series now in the hosts’ control with a 2-1 lead, India will want him to be fit and ready for the fourth Test at Old Trafford which begins on July 23.
