Manchester United were knocked out of the Carabao Cup on the back of a shattering 3-0 loss to Newcastle United in the Round of 16 on Thursday, November 2. Like any football fan across the world, it was shocking news for Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

The German manager sat with the reporters for the mandatory post-match presser following Liverpool’s 2-1 triumph over Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup. During the interaction, a journalist informed Klopp about Manchester United’s exit from the tournament. The 56-year-old first saw the result of the match on a television screen and became spellbound for a moment. Klopp reacted to the scoreline with a sympathetic “Oooh,” said “Okay” and then moved on to speak to the media.
It has been a disastrous season for Manchester United. They have so far endured 8 defeats in 15 appearances across all competitions. The Red Devils entered the Carabao Cup with the tag of the reigning champions. It was Newcastle United, whom they beat in last season’s final to secure the title. But the Magpies took sweet revenge this time, knocking United out of the tournament.
Despite dealing with several injury issues, Newcastle United pulled off a commanding start to the Round of 16 fixture at Old Trafford. The visitors fielded as many as six full-backs and there was no proper striker on the team sheet. Miguel Almiron broke the deadlock in the 28th minute before Lewis Hall made it 2-0 for Newcastle ahead of the first-half whistle.
Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag increased the number of players in the attack during the second half, calling on stars like Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes and Rasmus Hojlund. However, it was already too late to change the course of the game. Newcastle’s Joe Willock put the final nail in Manchester United’s coffin with a fine strike in the 60th minute, silencing a full-house Old Trafford.
Erik Ten Hag took responsibility for Manchester United’s heartbreaking exit from the Carabao Cup. During the post-match presser, Teg Hag said, “We know the standards you can expect with Manchester United, it is not good enough by far. We have to put things right. I take responsibility for it, it’s my team and they’re not performing. I share it with my players but I’m responsible.”
Before signing off, Ten Hag pledged to make a strong comeback in the future. “We have to do things better, we have to raise our standards because otherwise you never get the right levels, performance or results. The results are not there, the logical process is the confidence goes down,” the Dutch manager added.
Manchester United have also struggled to showcase their A-game in the Premier League. They are currently eighth in the points table with five victories in 10 games.
