Whenever we hear the name Mogambo, the late actor Amrish Puri’s name crosses our mind. This character from the film Mr. India was one of the most iconic villains of Bollywood. Did you know actor Anupam Kher was initially offered the role? But actor Anil Kapoor was the reason for the change in his casting. Mr India is a classic Bollywood film, which was released in 1987. Decades later, it has not lost its lustre among the audience. The film stars Anil Kapoor and Sridevi as the protagonists, and the antagonist is played by Amrish Puri. It was directed by Shekhar Kapoor. In an old interview, Anupam Kher revealed that he was the first choice for the role of Mogambo, but was dropped out because of Anil Kapoor. He said that Anil told him about this after a few years of the film’s release. Anil only gave this information to him after they became good friends. The reason why Anil got him replaced was not revealed.
Talking about his casting in the film, Anupam Kher said in another interview earlier, “In Mr. India, Mogambo’s role was offered to me … but after one or two months, makers of that film replaced me with Amrish Puri ji.” He further said, “When you are dropped from a film then generally an actor feels bad, but when I watched Mr India and saw Amrishji’s work as Mogambo, then I thought that makers of the film took the right decision by casting Amrish ji in their film.” Talking about Amrish Puri, Anupam said that he was a very good friend to him, and it was saddening for him to talk about him after he passed away. “He was a remarkable actor,” said Anupam.
Mr India became the second highest-grossing film of 1987. At the 58th Filmfare Awards, Sridevi was given a Special Award for her role in the film. Mr India was remade in Tamil with the title En Rathathin Rathame in 1989, and in Kannada, it was titled Jai Karnataka and was made in the same year.
