The iconic Elphinstone Bridge, the British-era 125-year-old ROB which is a key connecting link between Parel and Prabhadevi, is set to make way for the upcoming Sewri-Worli Elevated Connector, which will connect the Bandra-Worli Sea Link and the under-construction Coastal Road with the Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (MTHL) or Atal Setu.

While the shutting of the Elphinstone Bridge from 11.59 pm on Friday, September 12, 2025, means new and better infrastructure for Mumbai, the Sewri-Worli Elevated Corridor with a double-decker bridge, it will also lead to a traffic nightmare on motorists taking the Currey Road bridge.

Elphinstone Bridge To Shut From Today: Amid Likely Mumbai Traffic Chaos, These Are Routes To Take

The Mumbai Traffic Police, in a notification issued Thursday evening, listed the traffic diversions and restrictions to manage congestion during the demolition.

Currey Road bridge: One-way traffic schedule

To facilitate the diversion, the Mahadev Palav Road (Currey Road Railway Bridge) will operate on a strict one-way system:

• 7 am to 3 pm: One-way from Comrade Krishna Desai Chowk to Shingte Master Chowk.
• 3 pm to 11 pm: One-way from Shingte Master Chowk to Comrade Krishna Desai Chowk.
• 11 pm to 7 am: Two-way traffic allowed.

Currey Road bridge different sections open at different times of day, no-parking: What the diversion effectively means

Here’s what the change means for Currey Road bridge. Those coming from Parel East to Prabhadevi and Lower Parel, can use the Currey Road Bridge between 7 am and 3pm. Those heading from Prabhadevi and Lower Parel to Parel, TATA Hospital, and KEM Hospital, can use the Currey Road Bridge between 3 pm and 11 pm.

So, effectively, different parts of the bridge are one-way at different times of the day, which will mean more confusion and traffic chaos.

Parts of Mahadev Palav Road, Sane Guruji Road, and others, have been declared no-parking zones to prevent traffic jams

How much traffic will come on Currey Road bridge from Elphinstone Road bridge?

Picture this: The Elphinstone bridge passes over two railway stations — Prabhadevi (Western Railway) and Parel (Central Railway). It is used by 500,000-700,000 commuters daily. The bridge is in the middle several buildings and offices. It is surrounded by residential areas and schools, and hospitals like the Tata Memorial Hospital and KEM Hospital, which are frequented by tens of thousands of people daily.

All this traffic will now come on to Currey Road bridge.

What will come up in place of Elphinstone Bridge?

A new double-decker bridge will come up in place of the Elphinstone Road Over Bridge. It is expected to reduce traffic congestion and improve east-west connectivity.

The 132-metre ROB will simultaneously cross both the Central Railway and Western Railway Lines

Its lower deck will have 2+2 lanes with a footpath which will connect Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Road and Senapati Bapat Road. The upper deck will have 2+2 lanes (without footpath) for Sewri-Worli Elevated Corridor which will provide a direct link to the Atal Setu or. Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) — Sewri, South Mumbai to Chirle, Navi Mumbai link — for improved regional connectivity.
