World No. 1 Test bowler Jasprit Bumrah was rested by Indian team management for the second Test against England as part of his workload management, but the 31-year-old cricketer from Ahmedabad will be back in India’s playing XI for the third Test against the English team, which is set to take place at Lord’s in London from July 10 to 14.
While speaking during the post-match presentation ceremony after India secured a famous win by 336 runs over England in Birmingham on Sunday (July 6), India’s Test captain Shubman Gill confirmed the news of Bumrah’s availability for the third Test of the ongoing five-match series.
“Definitely (Bumrah back at Lord’s?). Very excited for that (Lord’s Test). Probably the most iconic cricket stadium in the world, and as a kid everyone dreams about playing there, and I think there is no bigger honour than to be able to captain your country and lead your team there,” Gill said on Sunday.
Bumrah, who is India’s third-highest wicket-taker in Tests in England, picked up a five-wicket haul in the first innings of the Leeds Test, which was played last month, but remained wicketless in the second.
Bumrah was replaced by Akash Deep in India’s playing XI for the second Test, and the 27-year-old fast bowler from Bihar made the most of the opportunity by finishing the match with a 10-wicket haul. Akash Deep is only the second Indian bowler after Chetan Sharma to dismiss 10 batters in a Test match played in England.
He picked up four wickets for 88 runs in the first innings and six wickets for 99 runs in the second. Akash’s figures of 10 for 187 are the best ever by an Indian bowler in England.
Bumrah’s return for the third Test in all likelihood will mean that Prasidh Krishna will be dropped from the playing XI. The Karnataka-based pacer was heavily trolled for his expensive bowling in the first Test as well as in the first innings of the second Test.
In addition to Krishna, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Karun Nair could also be left out of playing XI in favour of Kuldeep Yadav and B Sai Sudharsan. Kuldeep has 21 wickets to his name in six Tests played so far against the English team.
