NEW DELHI: The Indian team’s loss at the hands of mighty Australia in the 2023 World Cup final didn’t go well with many, right from ardent supporters to former players, who are coming up with different theories, as they have not been able to digest the outcome.
Ironically, Australia lost the first two matches and then went on to win the remaining nine to lift the World Cup for the record sixth time, while India registered 10 straight victories in commanding fashion before losing to the Aussies in the final.Former India player Mohammad Kaif couldn’t hide his feelings after India’s loss and shared his views while talking on Star Sports, “I can never accept that the best team has won the World Cup. The Indian team is the best team on paper.”
Reacting to Kaif’s remark, Australian opener David Warner on Wednesday took to social media platform ‘X’, formerly Twitter, and stated that at the end of the day you need to perform when it matters and that’s why they call it a final.
“I like MK, issue is it does not matter what’s on paper. At the end of the day you need to perform when it matters. That’s why they call it a final. That’s the day that counts and it can go either way, that’s sports. 2027 here we come,” Warner wrote on X.

Noted Australian broadcaster and sports commentator Glenn Mitchell also reacted to Kaif’s comment, saying that World Cup finals are won on a cricket field and not on paper.
“I think someone needs to remind former Indian batter, Mohammad Kaif that World Cup finals are won on a cricket field and not on paper,” Mitchell posted on X.

Warner finished the 2023 World Cup with 535 runs in 11 matches securing the sixth spot in the most runs scorers’ list. A brilliant fielder, Warner took the second spot in the ICC Fielding Impact Ratings with 82.55 points to his name. Warner took eight catches and saved as many as 23 runs on the field.
Warner has been rested for the T20I series against India that starts Thursday.
