NEW DELHI: Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba discussed the prospects for peace in Ukraine’s ongoing war against Russia with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi.
The discussion took place during the Munich Security Conference, where Kuleba emphasized the importance of bilateral relations, trade, and the restoration of a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. Both ministers agreed on the need to maintain Ukraine-China contacts at all levels and continue the dialogue.
Ukraine plans to hold a global peace summit with the assistance of Switzerland, and China has participated in the preparatory meetings for this summit. Kyiv aims to strengthen ties with Beijing and gain China’s support for its 10-point peace plan, which includes the withdrawal of Russian troops from occupied territory and the restoration of post-Soviet borders.
China, although pursuing a strategic partnership with Russia, proposed its own peace plan last year, but it made little progress. Ukraine has also sought support from nations in Africa and the Global South to bolster its diplomatic campaign.
Russia’s longstanding ties in these regions pose a challenge for Ukraine. Ron Popeski reporting. Alistair Bell editing.
