Veteran actor Nana Patekar recently spoke about the tragic loss of his eldest son, who battled health complications from birth. He expressed his feelings of self-disgust when he thought of others’ perceptions of his son’s condition.
Speaking about his eldest son’s demise, Nana told The Lallantop, “My eldest son was sick since birth. He had some complications. He had trouble in one eye, it wasn’t visible. I felt so disgusted that when I saw him, I thought about what people would think, what kind of son Nana has. I didn’t think about what he felt or how he felt. I only thought about what people would think about my son. His name was Durvasa. He spent two and a half years with us. But what can you do, some things happen in life.”
Nana revealed that he named his son after the angry sage Durvasa. He also talked about how he met his wife Neelakanti. They met during a play where she was a bank officer receiving a salary of two and a half thousand rupees. He shared that Neelakanti told him that if he wants to do plays and such, he can, as the money will come anyway.

The actor also shared the story of how he quit smoking because of his sister. He said, “It was because of my sister that I quit smoking. She lost her only son. At that time, I used to smoke about 60 cigarettes a day. I even smoked while bathing. But it’s a very bad thing. No one would sit in my car because of the foul smell. I never drank alcohol much but I smoked a lot. Then my sister saw me coughing after smoking. She said, ‘What else do you want to see?'”
Hearing that hurt Nana deeply, and he never smoked again after that day. All his habits changed after that.

Reflecting on his family, Nana praised his mother’s influence in keeping him away from negative influences like the underworld, which some relatives were involved in. He credited her for shaping his values and steering him towards a different path.
“What can I say about my mother? We owe everything to her. All the people from her side were connected to the underworld. Our uncles were also associated with the underworld. I didn’t want to be like that, so my mother took me away to the village. So that I wouldn’t get involved in the underworld,” Nana shared.
