NEW DELHI: ED Tuesday said it has attached properties worth Rs 4 crore of Congress MLA from Punjab Sukhpal Singh Khaira. The property is allegedly linked to ‘proceeds of crime’ generated from smuggling of drugs.
During searches on his associates, ED had seized 1.8 kg heroin, one .315 bore pistol and two live cartridges, two Pakistani SIMs, 24 gold biscuits and one .32 bore Webley Scot revolver. He was earlier also questioned for collecting illegal funds for AAP when he was with the party.
Khaira was arrested in Nov 2021 in a money laundering case related to an international drug syndicate. ED has already filed chargesheets against him and his associates in a PMLA court in 2022 where his associate, Gurdev Singh, was also made an accused. The charges were framed by PMLA court in Oct 2023.
“Probe revealed Khaira had acquired and utilised proceeds of crime of Rs 3.8 crore generated from the drug syndicate operated by Gurdev Singh and his overseas associates. In lieu of protection/passage provided for smuggling of drugs by Khaira, Gurdev had made cash payments of Rs 3.8 crore to him and funded Khaira’s poll campaigns,” ED said.
