NEW DELHI: Fatalities inflicted on civilians and security forces by Left-wing extremists fell below 100 in 2022, the lowest in four decades, even as counter-Naxal forces are reducing the security vacuum by having established 175 new camps since 2019 in the traditional Maoist strongholds, home minister Amit Shah told a parliamentary panel on Tuesday.
Chairing a meeting of the parliamentary consultative committee on ministry of home affairs here on Left-wing extremism, Shah said the three-pronged, counter-Naxal strategy — ruthless approach to curb extremist violence; better coordination between Centre and State; and development through public participation to end support for Left-wing extremism – has led to incidents of LWE violence coming down by 76% and killings of civilians and security personnel by 90%.
Referring to Narendra Modi government’s zero-tolerance policy towards terror, Shah said there is no place for violence and Left-wing extremism in “self-reliant and new India”. He said the home ministry is determined to destroy the entire ecosystem of Left wing extremists by choking their finances and making their top leadership ineffective.
The Centre’s three-pronged strategy to crush Left-wing extremism has yielded good results over the past eight years, with the number of civilian and security personnel killed in LWE incidents down to 98 in 2022 from 1005 in 2010. LWE affected districts are also down from 90 to 45, said Shah.
“Success has been achieved against LWE in difficult areas like Budha Pahad and Chakarbanda,” a home ministry release quoted Shah as saying.
