CHANDIGARH: The Punjab police on Saturday launched a major search operation to capture Waris Punjab De head Amritpal Singh as he escaped the arrest after police stopped his cavalcade.
His cavalcade was stopped by the police at Mehatpur in Jalandhar. Following that, some of his associates were detained, however, Singh managed to escape.
Last month, the supporters of Singh, described as a Khalistan sympathiser, protested against the arrest of one of his associates and clashed with police.
Following that, the first action came in form of beginning the process of the cancellation of arms licenses of WPD activists and then detaining Amritpal Singh’s social media account handler Gur Aujla.
A case was registered against Singh, for abduction on the complaint of Chamkaur Sahib resident Barinder Singh. Around 30 others have also been booked in the case.
Amritpal, who openly espouses the cause of Khalistan since his return to India from Dubai last year, had said that he didn’t consider himself an Indian citizen. Merely possessing an Indian passport, which he described as a travel document, doesn’t make him an Indian citizen, Amritpal reiterated.
