Exclusive interview with the author

Q: What Inspired You To Write This Book?

A: A somewhat naïve desire for getting my literary reflections tried and tested. At certain point in time, one needs to see and verify whether the path one is treading through is the right one or not. The book is one such effort in this direction. When one has been thinking, reading and teaching literature for some time now, it is imperative to apply and see the acumen one has gathered for its correctness and the need to revisit and improve. That is the implied motive of bringing forth this collection of articles.

Q: Can You Tell Us About The Book?

A: It would be an exaggeration to call the book ‘scholarly’ and an understatement to call it a mere ‘compilation of critical essays’. It is a record of a young researcher-teacher’s impressions gained during several encounters with reading and discussing literature in and outside classroom – with students, fellow-readers and scholars during his formative years as a teacher-researcher. The articles included here claim a horizontal expanse (if not vertical depth) in terms of genres and contemporary domains of English literature.

Q: What Does The Title Mean?

A: ‘Encounters’ are unexpected comings-across. All the constituent articles included here were summoned by almost unexpected academic occasions . Critical reading invariably involves interpretation. In that sense, the title. is tautolgical. Reading and interpretation are two things higher academics cannot ignore in spite of all technological advancements.

Q: What Did You Learn When Writing The Book?

A: That there is a lot to improve and learn. While age is never directly or inversely related to mediocrity or excellence, reading definitely ripens with re-reading in subsequent years. In this way, the views and conclusions reached here are certainly open to further revisions.

Q:What, In Your Opinion, Are The Most Important Elements Of Good Writing?

A: Reading, re-reading, writing and re-writing added with research.

Q: What Advice Would You Give To Aspiring Authors?

A: To all peers including myself, I would try and suggest that patience is the key to success. Endurance, patience and sustained efforts are acutely desirable in today’s higher academics.
