The Supreme Court on Tuesday will continue hearing the rape and murder case of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday will continue hearing the rape and murder case of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The state of West Bengal will likely furnish all details related to security measures for protesting doctors, the latest report on the missing death challan and the facilities provided to CISF personnel guarding the hospital.

The hearing comes a day after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday announced the removal of the Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal from his post. The decision was reached following a six-hour-long meeting with the junior doctors seeking justice for the victim.

A three-judge bench headed by CJI DY Chandrachud will consider the fresh status report of the CBI, investigating the RG Kar rape and murder case. The probe agency has arrested the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital Sandip Ghosh and former officer-in-charge of Tala Police Station Abhijit Mondal in connection with the rape and murder case.

Mondal was in charge of the Tala Police Station when the body of the medic was recovered from the seminar hall within the hospital premises on August 9. Both Ghosh and Mondal are accused of tampering with the evidence of crime, violating official procedure and misleading the probe. Ghosh is already in CBI custody in a case related to financial irregularities at the hospital.

In the last hearing on September 9, the top court termed the rape and murder case of the medic as ‘ ‘horrific,’ which raises the ‘systemic issue of safety of doctors across the country.’ It ordered the constitution of a National Task Force (NTF) to suggest measures for the security of medical professionals.

The West Bengal government is also likely to clarify whether a death challan was issued before the autopsy of the victim. During the last hearing, the CJI noted the importance of challan in such cases which mentions items like clothes seized by police for the investigation. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the CBI, told the court that the challan was missing from the files handed over by Kolkata Police.
