It was a night to remember at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, where Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) finally ended their 18-year-long wait to lift the IPL trophy. Among the many fans in the crowd were former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his wife Akshata Murty who were seen cheering enthusiastically for the team throughout the match.
After the final, which saw RCB defeat Punjab Kings in a thrilling six-run win, Akshata took to Instagram to share a special moment. She posted a carousel of photos from the night, including one that stood out. It was a picture of her and Rishi posing with cricket icon Virat Kohli and his wife, actor Anushka Sharma. The four of them, all smiles, looked happy as they celebrated the historic win together.
The post also included a photo of Rishi and Akshata standing on the ground, smiling for the camera, along with a short video of the couple cheering during the match.
In the caption, Akshata wrote, “What a night. What a match. What a moment for Bengaluru. To have been in Ahmedabad, witnessing Royal Challengers Bengaluru make history was something truly special!”
She added, “From the electric energy at the ground to the celebrations echoing across Bengaluru, this victory means so much to all of us who’ve waited and believed. Proud of this brilliant team and the city I grew up in. Ee Saala Cup Namdu!”
Take a look at her post here:
Before the big match, Rishi had already shown his support for RCB. Speaking to The Times Of India, he said, “I’m married into a Bangalore family, so RCB is my team.” He also recalled proposing to Akshata in Kannada — a language he said he hadn’t fully mastered yet.
Reminiscing further, he shared, “We’ve been to RCB matches together years ago, and I even cheered for them from Downing Street. Last season’s run was especially exciting.”
He added, “I’m a massive Virat Kohli fan. He’s a total legend,” and revealed that India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar once gifted him a signed bat as a Diwali present.
RCB’s win on Tuesday night ended an 18-year-long wait, giving the team their first-ever IPL title since the league began in 2008. The moment the victory was sealed, Virat Kohli was seen in tears. It was clear just how much this trophy meant to him.
