A man dressed as the superhero ‘Batman’ angrily confronted officials over fears that federal immigration agents could be deployed during next month’s Super Bowl, during a city council meeting in California’s Santa Clara on Tuesday.
Wearing a full superhero costume, the man stepped up to the podium during the public comment period and immediately drew attention with a dramatic entrance, slamming the lectern and shouting as he questioned city leaders’ preparedness and priorities.
The video of the confrontation has gone viral on social media.
The speaker referenced recent fatal incidents involving federal agents and demanded that council members take a firm stand ahead of the NFL championship game, which will be held in the city on February 8. He pressed officials to publicly commit to denying Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) any assistance or access to local resources during the event.
“You have had months to prepare for this upcoming event,” he told the council, urging them to act decisively rather than remain passive. Throughout his remarks, he challenged officials to consider the impact of immigration enforcement on families and children, calling on them to demonstrate courage in standing up to federal authorities.
“You need to affirm that no city resources will go to ICE, that no cooperation will be given to them,” he demanded.
“What the f*** are we doing here? People are dying on our streets every single day in this country because we allow this federal government to walk all over you,” he said.
He accused elected officials of failing to protect residents from what he described as aggressive federal immigration enforcement.
“Look me in the eye. Can any of you go home to their children and tell them you did everything to protect their classmates?…I don’t think I need to go into how many people have been shot…how many children have been abducted and used as bait,” he said.
“I don’t need to tell you that. You see it on the TV every single day. I don’t want you to sit back and watch. I want you to f***ing do something. I am not begging you. I am f***ing demanding that you act with some semblance of a f***ing spine,” he further said.
The speaker’s real identity remains unknown. He was simply listed as “Batman” on the timer tracking public comments. Video of the outburst has sparked a debate over immigration policy, public safety, and the role of local governments as Santa Clara prepares to host one of the world’s biggest sporting events.
Tensions Over ICE Actions
Tensions around immigration enforcement have escalated nationwide following the recent deaths of two people in Minneapolis during operations involving ICE and Border Patrol. Those incidents have fueled protests and renewed scrutiny of federal tactics.
Concerns about ICE activity at the Super Bowl surfaced earlier after Corey Lewandowski, an adviser to the Department of Homeland Security, criticised the NFL’s choice of pop star Bad Bunny, a US citizen, as the halftime performer.
“It’s so shameful that they’ve decided to pick somebody who just seems to hate America so much,” Lewandowski said in September, the report mentioned.
“There is nowhere that you can provide safe haven to people in this country illegally,” he added. “Not the Super Bowl and nowhere else.”
