African football’s long-standing credibility problem has been dragged back into the spotlight — by those in power, themselves.

One could perhaps say that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is pulling off its very own ‘Spiderman‘ meme.

CAF president Patrice Motsepe openly admitted that the game on the continent still battles “suspicion and mistrust,” following the explosive decision to strip Senegal of their Africa Cup of Nations title and award it to Morocco.

AFCON Final Chaos Sparks Controversy

The drama stemmed from the January 18 final in Rabat, where Senegal initially won 1-0.

However, the match was marred by a late flashpoint — Morocco being awarded a penalty, which led to Senegal walking off the pitch in protest for 14 minutes before eventually returning to finish the game.

While CAF’s Disciplinary Board initially dismissed Morocco’s protest, the Appeal Board later overturned that decision.

Their ruling? Senegal had violated tournament rules by staging a walkoff — handing Morocco the title in a move that has since divided opinion across the football world.

“Integrity Still Under Question”

Motsepe did not shy away from the bigger picture.

“It undermines the good work CAF has done… to ensure integrity, respect, ethics and credibility,” he said. “We are still dealing with suspicion and mistrust. It’s a legacy issue.”

The controversy has reignited long-standing concerns around officiating, governance, and consistency in African football.

Despite it all, Motsepe stood firmly by the CAF’s process, stressing that both disciplinary bodies operate independently and are staffed by respected legal experts from across Africa.

CAF Defends Its Decision-Making

Motsepe emphasised that governance structures within CAF are designed to be impartial and transparent, pushing back against claims that Morocco may have received preferential treatment.

“Not a single country in Africa will be treated in a more favourable manner,” he insisted.

It’s not like Morocco is hosting the 2026 Women’s AFCON, and CAF wouldn’t want to upset their hosts.

He also welcomed Senegal’s expected appeal, reinforcing that every member nation has the right to challenge decisions at the highest level.

Yet, even as CAF defends its systems, the damage may already be done.
