US-Iran War News LIVE Updates: US Strikes Iran After Hormuz Ship Attacks, Tehran Warns Of Response
The US on Wednesday launched what it called “powerful” strikes on Iran after three commercial vessels were attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, marking a sharp escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the strikes were carried out in response to Iranian attacks on commercial ships transiting the strategic waterway.
The military action came shortly after Washington revoked a temporary sanctions waiver that had allowed Iran to produce, sell and deliver crude oil under the MoU signed between the two countries in June. The waiver had been due to remain in force until August 21.
Meanwhile, Iranian state media reported multiple explosions near the Strait of Hormuz, including on Qeshm Island, in Sirik and in the port city of Bandar Abbas.
Iran responded by accusing the US of repeatedly violating the MOU and warned of retaliation. “Iran is issuing a serious warning about the consequences of America’s breach of the treaty, and will take decisive measures to protect its interests and national security,” its foreign ministry said.
