An Indian Navy sailor, his wife and their two young children were found dead at their residence in Mumbai’s Navy Nagar, with preliminary findings suggesting that the sailor died by suicide and that his wife and children may have died after being poisoned.
The children were aged two months and three years. The bodies were recovered from the family’s apartment in the high-security cantonment area of Navy Nagar in Colaba.
The deceased have been identified as Puranmal Shambhulal Mehra (30), his wife Oma Puranmal Mehra (28), their three-year-old son Yash Mehra, and their two-month-old infant.
The incident came to light on Saturday, following which local police reached the residence and began an investigation. The circumstances surrounding the deaths are being probed.
According to preliminary information received by the Cuffe Parade police, Puranmal was found hanging inside the residence, while his wife and the two children were found dead on a bed. The police subsequently registered an accidental death report (ADR) and began investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
The Indian Navy confirmed the deaths in a statement, noting, “In an unfortunate incident at Navy Nagar, Colaba, an Indian Navy sailor along with his wife and two children were found dead at their residence on August 15, 2026. Investigation is in progress by the police and the Indian Navy is extending all possible assistance towards the same.”
Preliminary findings suggest that Puranmal may have died by suicide by hanging. Police also suspect that his wife and the two children may have died after consuming a poisonous substance. However, officials are yet to reach a final conclusion.
The four bodies were taken to JJ Hospital in Mumbai for medico-legal examination. The post-mortem examinations are underway and are expected to establish the exact causes of death. Police are also investigating the circumstances leading up to the incident.
The police are now trying to piece together the events that unfolded inside the residence before the bodies were discovered. Investigators are examining all possible angles, including the circumstances surrounding the sailor’s death and the suspected poisoning of his wife and children.
