PayPal Lays Off Around 600 Employees In India ‘Without Prior Notice’, Many Receive Off-Boarding Email

PayPal has laid off employees across multiple teams in India as the American fintech giant restructures its global workforce, with the company and sources differing on the scale of the cuts.
People familiar with the matter told Moneycontrol that around 600 employees have been laid off across PayPal’s India operations. The job cuts affected teams including technology, engineering, operations, payments and finance across its offices in Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
However, PayPal disputed the number. A company spokesperson was quoted as saying that the headcount reduction on August 31 was approximately 220 employees, representing a 4 per cent reduction in its India workforce.
PayPal India has more than 6,000 employees, according to the report.
The sources’ estimate of 600 job cuts would therefore amount to roughly 10 per cent of the workforce.
PayPal Employees Informed Via Emails, Calls
The layoffs reportedly came with little or no prior notice for some employees.
“We didn’t get any prior notice. We got an invite to join a call on Monday morning (August 31), and there were many employees on it from across offices in India. We were informed that we would be let go. Right after the call, our access was immediately revoked,” one impacted employee was quoted as saying.
The employee said they subsequently received an off-boarding email outlining the process.
Some also said the affected workers were being offered job assistance and had been promised one month’s salary as severance, although they were yet to receive further communication regarding the severance and full-and-final settlement.
Another employee was quoted as saying that they received a direct email on Monday morning informing them that they had been fired.
PayPal said the staffing changes are part of a previously announced transformation programme.
“The recent staffing changes are part of our previously announced multi-year transformation to simplify our global operations, strengthen execution, and position the company for long-term growth,” a PayPal spokesperson said.
“Decisions like these are never easy. We recognise the impact they have on our employees and are committed to supporting them through this transition.”
India Among First Markets Hit
According to media reports cited by the report, PayPal’s global layoffs are being implemented in phases, beginning in the Asia-Pacific region, including India.
Meetings with affected employees were subsequently held across the US, Europe, the Middle East and Africa on Monday, the report said.
In Ireland, around 164 employees were reportedly laid off on the same day, accounting for about 12 per cent of PayPal’s workforce there.
The latest cuts follow PayPal management’s announcement in May 2026 that it planned to reduce its global workforce by 20 per cent over the next two to three years.
The company had said the move was part of a plan to deliver at least $1.5 billion in gross run-rate savings over the same period.
PayPal had about 23,800 employees globally at the end of 2025, meaning a 20 per cent workforce reduction could affect approximately 4,760 roles.
PayPal’s India Technology Footprint
PayPal established its first development centre in India in Chennai in 2008.
The centre is the company’s largest technology hub outside the US and works on core payment platforms, cloud infrastructure, mobile experiences and distributed computing.
The company later opened a second centre in Bengaluru, which operates as an innovation lab focused on areas including machine learning, artificial intelligence, computer vision and data science.
Its Hyderabad technology hub, opened in 2019, focuses on risk management, fraud prevention and data science, supporting small and medium-sized businesses.
