Delhi and adjoining areas received rain on Friday afternoon as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) upgraded its warning for the national capital to a red alert, forecasting more showers accompanied by thunderstorms.

Several flights were delayed at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport due to rain. Air India said flight operations to and from Delhi may be affected by adverse weather conditions on Friday. The airline advised passengers to check their latest flight status before heading to the airport.

Noida and Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh were placed under an orange warning by the IMD.

Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 25.5 degrees Celsius on Friday, 0.1 degrees above normal, according to station-wise data from Palam. Lodhi Road recorded a minimum of 27.6 degrees Celsius, 2.6 degrees above normal. The Ridge recorded a minimum temperature of 23.7 degrees Celsius, 0.5 degrees below normal, while Ayanagar recorded 27 degrees Celsius, 2.3 degrees above normal.

The maximum temperature was expected to remain around 32 degrees Celsius, while relative humidity stood at 75% in the morning.

The latest spell comes after Delhi recorded a wetter-than-normal August. The capital received 354.1 mm of rainfall between August 1 and August 30 until 5:30 pm, more than 120 mm above the IMD’s long-period average (LPA) of 233.1 mm for the month.

Delhi also recorded excess rainfall in August in 2025 and 2024, receiving 400.81 mm and 390.3 mm, respectively. These were the first instances since 2020 when August rainfall crossed the monthly LPA. Since 2011, Delhi has recorded rainfall above the August LPA only six times- in 2012, 2013, 2020, 2024, 2025 and 2026.

Haryana recorded its first rainfall deficit for August in three years, receiving 138.5 mm against the normal 146.1 mm, a shortfall of 5%, according to IMD data. Gurugram, however, recorded 217.4 mm of rainfall against its normal 185.1 mm, a surplus of 17%, placing the district in the normal rainfall category. The city received 66.5 mm of rain between August 21 and 27, which was 58% above its normal weekly rainfall.
