Stock Market Today, September 4: The domestic equity markets ended higher on Friday, snapping a four-session losing streak, as buying in metal and financial stocks helped the market withstand pressure in several key sectors. The Nifty closed at 23,897.70, up 0.10%, after moving between an intraday high of 24,005.75 and a low of 23,895.85. The Sensex gained 362.57 points or 0.48 per cent to trade at 76,515.43.

The rally was supported by positive global cues and easing expectations of a US Federal Reserve rate hike in September. Reuters reported that comments from Fed Governor Christopher Waller lowered the probability of a September rate hike, helping global equities and pushing bond yields lower.

The recovery, however, was uneven across the market. The Nifty Financial Services index rose 0.49%, while the Financial Services 25/50 index gained 0.47%. Financial Services ex-Bank advanced 0.80% and the MidSmall Financial Services index added 0.55%. Private banks also finished higher, while the Nifty Bank ended marginally lower.

Metal stocks emerged as the strongest sector, with the Nifty Metal index gaining 1.07%. The oil and gas index rose 0.21%, while cement advanced 0.43%. On the other hand, Nifty Realty fell 0.90%, Healthcare declined 0.87%, Pharma slipped 0.68%, Chemicals lost 0.73% and IT dropped 0.47%. Auto and PSU Bank indices also ended lower.

Among individual Nifty stocks, Tata Steel was the top gainer, rising 2.97%, followed by Trent, up 2.03%, and Reliance Industries, which gained 2%. Bajaj Finance advanced 1.63%, HDFC Bank rose 1.56%, while Titan, Kotak Mahindra Bank, NTPC and Adani Ports also finished with gains of more than 1%.

On the losing side, Eternal fell 1.24%, while HCLTech declined 1.24%, Bharti Airtel dropped 0.80%, Tech Mahindra slipped 0.50% and Asian Paints fell 0.48%. Sun Pharma, ICICI Bank, TCS and Maruti also ended lower.

The broader market remained mixed. The Nifty Smallcap 50 gained 0.32%, Smallcap 250 rose 0.20%, Smallcap 500 added 0.32% and Microcap 250 climbed 0.67%, while Midcap 50, Midcap 100 and Midcap 150 ended in the red.

India VIX fell sharply by 6.19% to 10.64, indicating a moderation in near-term market volatility.

Despite Friday’s recovery, elevated crude oil prices and the ongoing US-Iran war remain key risks for Indian equities. Brent crude was hovering near $96 a barrel amid renewed hostilities, keeping concerns over inflation and India’s import bill alive.

The market’s rebound also came after Thursday’s unusually volatile session, when the Sensex eventually closed at 76,152.86 and the Nifty at 23,873.45 following sharp swings during the newly introduced closing auction session.
