US President Donald Trump on Saturday suggested that Iran was “probably” behind an aerial strike targeting Saudi Arabia’s East-West oil pipeline, a strategically important route that allows the kingdom to transport crude without relying on the Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking to reporters in Dublin, Trump was asked if he believed Tehran was responsible for the attack that disrupted the key oil route. “I think they are, probably they are,” he said. The US President also said he had spoken with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, whom he referred to as a “good friend”.

Trump also spoke about contacts between his administration and Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi rebels, saying the group had conveyed that it did not want Washington to become directly involved in the ongoing conflict.

“They would much prefer not having us involved, and they’re letting most ships go through,” Trump said, adding, “There’s just one country that they’re not too happy with, and we’ll get that straightened out.”
