Uttarakhand recorded 775 road accident deaths in the first seven months of 2026, with speeding and rash driving among the key causes cited by the Transport Department.

Uttarakhand has recorded a high number of road accident fatalities in the first seven months of 2026, with 775 people losing their lives in road crashes till July. The figure comes against 1,285 road accident deaths recorded across the state during the whole of 2025, indicating a significant number of fatalities even before the current year reaches its final five months.

Road accidents remain a major challenge for the Himalayan state, which has several tourist destinations and a difficult mountainous terrain. The number of people dying in road accidents has also been rising since 2019, with the trend showing a further jump this year.

Speeding, Rash Driving Among Major Causes

According to the data, speeding and rash driving remain among the major reasons behind road accidents in Uttarakhand. Other factors include driving under the influence of alcohol, driving on the wrong side, overloading, poor vehicle maintenance, driving by minors and parking in no-parking zones.

In the state’s mountainous areas, long-distance driving without adequate breaks, speeding, overloading and unsafe overtaking have also been cited as contributing factors. Driving on hill routes without the mandatory ‘hill driving’ licence is another concern.

Road conditions and driving practices further add to the risks, with potholes, lack of crash barriers at several locations and night driving contributing to accidents.

Four Districts Record High Number Of Fatalities

Among Uttarakhand’s 13 districts, Dehradun, Udham Singh Nagar, Haridwar and Nainital have recorded the highest number of road accidents and fatalities.

The figures cited for deaths from 2025 through July 2026 show 264 deaths in Dehradun, 342 in Udham Singh Nagar, 362 in Haridwar and 196 in Nainital.

The hill districts have also reported fatalities. The figures for July 2025 and July 2026 include 88 deaths in Tehri, 34 in Pauri, 32 in Chamoli, 20 in Uttarkashi, 21 in Champawat, 46 in Rudraprayag, 53 in Pithoragarh, 33 in Almora and 15 in Bageshwar.

Government Allocates ₹800 Crore For Safety Measures

The Uttarakhand government and its Transport Department have been working on measures aimed at reducing road accidents. Around ₹800 crore has been allocated to the Transport Department for installing crash barriers in both hilly and plain areas.

The government is also working to address 179 identified black spots, or accident-prone locations, across the state. Remedial work has already been completed at 169 of these locations, according to the data.

Other measures include social media-based awareness campaigns, mapping hazardous locations and using new technologies to help prevent accidents.

Despite these efforts, however, the expected reduction in road accidents has not yet been achieved.

Transport Department Says Speeding A Key Concern

Shailesh Tiwari, Deputy Commissioner of the Uttarakhand Transport Department, said rash driving and speeding were the primary causes of road accidents in the state.

He also highlighted driving on the wrong side of the road as a contributing factor and said the Transport Department was working with the police to tackle the problem.

“We have implemented strict regulations regarding this matter and installed signboards at various locations. Furthermore, challans are being issued to drivers traveling in the wrong direction or exceeding speed limits,” Tiwari said.

He added that high-speed cameras had been installed on roads to identify and catch traffic violators.

Three Road Deaths A Day In Seven Months

The 775 fatalities recorded till July 2026 work out to an average of around three deaths a day during the seven-month period.

For comparison, the 1,285 road accident deaths recorded during the whole of 2025 also amounted to an average of around three fatalities every day, or approximately one road accident death every eight hours.

The figures underline the continuing challenge faced by Uttarakhand in curbing road accidents despite enforcement measures, infrastructure improvements and awareness initiatives.
