A Russian strike has reportedly hit Kharkiv’s Thermal Power Plant No. 5 (TPP-5), Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, even as US President Donald Trump announced an immediate “energy ceasefire” between Russia and Ukraine.
The reported strike comes at a critical moment, with Trump claiming on October 11 that both sides had agreed to stop attacks on energy infrastructure. However, the exact terms and implementation of the proposed ceasefire remained unclear.
Zelenskyy had earlier said Ukraine was prepared to stop attacks on Russian oil refineries if Moscow also stopped strikes against Ukrainian energy infrastructure. He stressed that any de-escalation would have to be mutual and backed by credible guarantees.
The reported targeting of TPP-5 is significant because Kharkiv’s energy infrastructure has repeatedly come under Russian attack. The plant was previously badly damaged during Russia’s campaign against Ukraine’s power grid and has been a key part of the city’s energy system.
Trump’s announcement has also created uncertainty in Kyiv. While Ukrainian officials have indicated they could support an energy truce if Russia reciprocates, Moscow had not immediately confirmed the arrangement.
The latest developments come amid intensified Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure ahead of winter, raising fresh concerns over electricity and heating supplies across the country.
