Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has reportedly declined a request from Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and a delegation to meet him over their concerns regarding alleged “vote chori” and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, according to a CNN News18 report citing top sources.
Sources said a detailed response has been sent to Gandhi explaining the decision. According to the report, the CJI has indicated that instead of submitting a memorandum, Gandhi and the delegation should approach the court by filing a petition.
The sources said the matter is already sub judice and should therefore be dealt with through the judicial process rather than through administrative intervention.
The development comes ahead of the Opposition’s planned march to the Supreme Court on Monday. Gandhi had announced the march in a post on X, calling on young people, opposition parties and civil society groups to join.
“Tomorrow, we will march to the Supreme Court as Indians, united beyond party, gender, caste, community and state,” Gandhi said.
He also appealed to various groups to participate, saying, “Youth, all opposition parties, civil society groups, all those who believe in democracy and stand by the Constitution of India, will walk with us.”
Gandhi had said the delegation would submit a memorandum to the Chief Justice, outlining its demands.
“We will submit a memorandum to the Chief Justice on behalf of the nation, demanding an end to vote chori, halting of SIR and the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar,” he said.
The Congress leader also urged people to join the protest, saying, “We will march together, with love, brotherhood and patriotism.”
He ended his appeal with “Daro mat”, and added, “Tomorrow, all of India will march to the Supreme Court.”
The proposed march follows days of political confrontation over electoral rolls and the functioning of the Election Commission. On October 9, an INDIA bloc delegation had also submitted a memorandum to President Droupadi Murmu over the issue.
Gandhi has repeatedly accused the Election Commission of facilitating what he describes as “vote chori” and has demanded action over the SIR exercise and the role of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
