Marco Rubio India Visit Live Updates: Rubio Indicates India Expected To Get Better Tariff Rates In Proposed Deal With US
Marco Rubio India Visit Live Updates: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in India on Tuesday for a three-day visit. Rubio held talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in Mumbai. This visit comes amid tensions in ties between the two nations over visa curbs and tariff threats.
Rubio’s meeting with EAM Jaishankar is being seen as an effort to repair bilateral ties. The two sides discussed energy, trade and defence, among other topics.
Rubio, however, will not travel to Delhi. Instead, he will go to Jamnagar on Wednesday, October 21, where he is expected to visit a major oil refinery.
‘Close To Finalising Trade Deal’
Ahead of his India visit, Marco Rubio said that New Delhi and Washington are “close to finalising a trade deal”.
“We’re trying to finalise a trade deal with India right now. We’re very close to doing that,” he said, adding that the ongoing negotiations are among the factors being considered by US President Donald Trump while making decisions on sanctions waivers related to Russian oil and gas.
“That’s one of the things we take into consideration when the President makes a decision about national security waivers and things of that nature,” he said.
