Apple’s Next AirPods May Have Cameras, Leaked Video Suggests

Apple appears to have accidentally revealed its long-rumoured camera-equipped AirPods through its own software. A short demo video was discovered hidden inside the release candidate for macOS Tahoe 26.7, showing the earbuds in use with Apple’s Visual Intelligence feature.

What The Leaked Video Shows

The video shows a person wearing AirPods and holding up a book, with a voiceover explaining that Visual Intelligence can identify what the wearer is looking at and save the information for later, simply by asking. The demonstration suggests the AirPods would use built-in cameras to feed real-world visuals to Siri, letting it recognise objects and provide relevant context without the user needing to take out their phone.

No actual camera lens is visible in the footage. The earbuds otherwise resemble the current AirPods Pro, with the stem appearing slightly thicker than usual, which is where the camera hardware is expected to be housed.

What Else Was Found In The Leak

Alongside the video, the same software build reportedly contains the codename B790 for the upcoming AirPods, as well as an on-device alert warning users to keep the AirPods uncovered for accurate readings, worded along the lines of ensuring nothing is blocking the earbuds for the feature to work correctly.

According to earlier reporting, Apple has been developing camera-equipped AirPods for some time, with the feature intended purely for real-time recognition rather than capturing photos or video.

When Could These AirPods Launch

Timelines around the launch have varied across reports. Some earlier reports pointed to a 2027 release, while more recent reporting suggests Apple could unveil the camera-equipped AirPods alongside its next iPhone lineup, expected in September.

Since this was an unintentional leak through Apple’s own software rather than an official announcement, none of these details are confirmed by the company, and specifics such as pricing, exact features and launch timing could still change.

Why This Matters

If launched, camera-equipped AirPods would mark one of the more significant redesigns of the product since it first came out, extending Apple’s AI ambitions beyond the phone and into an accessory that stays with the user all day. It also raises fresh questions around privacy, since even a low-resolution camera on an always-worn device is a meaningfully different proposition from a camera on a phone that stays in a pocket.
