Lok Sabha Member of Parliament (MP) and Puducherry Congress Committee (PCC) chief V. Vaithilingam has sought the Centre’s intervention for securing the release of 12 fishermen from Puducherry and Tamil Nadu who were recently detained by the Sri Lankan Navy.

In a letter to the Union Minister for External Affairs S. Jaishankar, the MP said the Sri Lankan Navy had taken into custody 12 fishermen while they were fishing near Kodiyakarai on April 11, 2026. Of the 12 detained fishermen, seven are from the Karaikal region of the Union Territory and the remaining five are from Mayiladuthurai district in Tamil Nadu.
