Argentina could face disciplinary action from FIFA after its players displayed a Falklands Islands banner during celebrations following their semi-final victory over England on Thursday.
After Argentina’s dramatic 2-1 comeback win at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, midfielder Giovani Lo Celso appeared on the pitch holding a banner that read “Las Malvinas son Argentinas”, meaning “The Malvinas are Argentine.” The message refers to Argentina’s claim over the Falkland Islands, a long-running sovereignty dispute with the United Kingdom.
The incident has raised questions over whether the celebration breached FIFA regulations, which restrict political messages and symbols at football events. However, FIFA has not issued any statement or confirmed that disciplinary proceedings have been opened.
Argentina’s win saw the defending champions advance to the World Cup final after scoring twice to overturn England’s lead and secure a 2-1 victory.
What FIFA Rules Say On Political Displays?
FIFA’s Stadium Code of Conduct prohibits banners, flags, clothing and other material considered to be of a political, offensive or discriminatory nature inside stadiums.
Football’s lawmakers, the International Football Association Board (IFAB), also state that players and teams can face sanctions for displaying political, religious or personal messages.
“Equipment must not have any political, religious or personal slogans, statements or images,” the IFAB rulebook states, adding that violations can lead to action by competition organisers, national football associations or FIFA.
Why The Falklands Banner Is Controversial?
The Falkland Islands, known as the Malvinas in Argentina, are a British overseas territory located in the South Atlantic Ocean, around 300 miles (480 km) off Argentina’s eastern coast.
The two countries fought a 74-day war over the islands in 1982 after Argentina’s military government launched an invasion. Britain responded by sending a military task force and regained control of the territory. The conflict resulted in the deaths of 649 Argentine soldiers and 255 British servicemen, along with three island residents.
Argentina has continued to claim sovereignty over the islands, arguing that it inherited the territory from Spain after gaining independence in 1816 and that British control began through an illegal act in 1833. Britain maintains that the islanders have the right to decide their own future, with most residents supporting continued British rule.
For now, FIFA has not announced any action against Argentina, and any potential decision would depend on reports submitted by match officials and the governing body’s review.
