Days After PM Modi’s Schoolmate Seeks Help Over 15-Year Mumbai Land Row, BJP MLA Gives Up ‘Disputed’ Plot

Days after 81-year-old Asgar Ali Vora, who is Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s schoolmate, met him over a 15-year-old land dispute in Mumbai’s Bhayander, BJP MLA Narendra Mehta on Tuesday said he would give up possession of the disputed plot and surrender the construction permission granted for it.
Vora had met PM Modi on September 8 seeking his intervention, alleging that his 2,810-square-metre plot had been taken over by Swayam Builders and Mehta’s Seven Eleven Constructions. Following the meeting, government authorities took up the matter and convened a meeting at Mantralaya on Tuesday, according to The Times of India.
Mehta also said he would withdraw a complaint he had earlier filed against Vora, saying the two sides had reached a settlement.
Vora’s 15-year fight over 2,810-sqm plot
Asgar Ali Vora said he had purchased around 2,810 square metres of land at Navghar in Bhayander East in 1989. According to him, the plot was taken over in 2011 by Swayam Builders and Mehta’s Seven Eleven Constructions. He said he had been approaching various government authorities over the issue for nearly 15 years.
Vora had also said that he received a positive response from Modi when he met the Prime Minister on September 8. Following the meeting, government authorities took up the matter. A meeting was subsequently convened at Mantralaya on Tuesday by Shrikar Pardeshi, principal secretary to the Chief Minister.
What happened at Mantralaya meeting?
The meeting was attended by Vora, Mehta, Mira-Bhayander municipal commissioner Radha Binod Sharma and town planner Purushottam Shinde. During the meeting, Mehta submitted a letter to the town planning department stating that he was giving up possession of the disputed land and surrendering the construction permission granted for the plot.
In the letter, Mehta said the land had been purchased from Mervyn Fernandes in 2019.
The decision marks a significant development in the dispute that Vora had been pursuing with government authorities for several years.
MLA withdraws complaint against Vora
Mehta also said he would withdraw a complaint he had earlier filed against Vora. In a separate letter to the police commissioner, the BJP MLA said the complaint was being withdrawn after the two sides reached a settlement.
The move came at the Mantralaya meeting where Mehta also submitted his decision to give up possession of the disputed land and surrender the construction permission granted for the plot.
