The incident occurred on Sunday as the team travelled back from an away match in the Ghana Premier League against Samartex in Samreboi, roughly 270 km from Berekum, a game they had narrowly lost 1-0.
According to a statement from Berekum Chelsea, “masked men wielding guns and assault rifles” ambushed the team bus, blocking the road and forcing the vehicle to stop during the return journey.
Police reports indicate that as the driver attempted to reverse the bus to escape, the attackers opened fire. Frimpong was struck in the head and later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
