Heavy Rain, Landslides Kill 3 Sikkim, Maharashtra Braces For Showers As Delhi Reels Under Heatwave – News18

As several parts of north and northwest India are still grappling with the heatwave, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted heavy rainfall over Sikkim West Bengal, Maharashtra, Goa, Telangana, Kerala and Karnataka.

At least three persons died and three others are missing after heavy rain triggered a flash flood and landslides in several parts of Sikkim. The heavy downpour in the state is likely to continue till Sunday, according to IMD’s Gangtok unit.

The monsoon season has wreaked havoc in Sikkim with overnight heavy rain in Mangan District resulting in the death of 3 people, while 3 others are still missing. The heavy downpour in Sikkim is likely to carry on till June 16, according to IMD’s Gangtok unit.

Similarly, rain-related incidents have claimed the lives of 14 persons in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra since June 1, with 11 of these deaths caused by lightning strikes. The latest four deaths occurred in Parbhani and Hingoli districts in the last two days, a primary survey report prepared by the divisional commissioner’s office said.

On the other side, the national capital Delhi continues to reel under heatwave as the maximum temperature for the last 15 days has stayed above 40 degrees Celsius. Monsoon is expected to arrive in the city by the end of this month, around June 27, the IMD said.

Heatwave Warning

As per weathermen, heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are very likely in several parts of Uttar Pradesh till July 17. Similar weather patterns are likely over

Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand till July 15.

Heatwave conditions are also predicted in isolated pockets of Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, during the next 5 days, in northeast Madhya Pradesh, northwest Rajasthan till Friday and in northeast Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu Division and Odisha on Thursday.

Rainfall Alert

As per IMD, a cyclonic circulation lies over northeast Assam and the neighbourhood and another over north Bangladesh and neighbourhood in lower tropospheric levels.

Under the influence of this, widespread light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning is likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Sub-Himalayan

West Bengal and Sikkim during the next 7 days.

Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is also very likely over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh during the next 5 days and isolated heavy rainfall over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura till Sunday.

Isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning is also very likely over Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha during the next 3 days and increase thereafter, the weather agency said.

Similar weather patterns are also very likely over Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh during the next 5 days.

Further, IMD said isolated heavy rainfall is very likely over Odisha on July 13, 16 and 17.

For southern and western states, IMD said scattered to fairly widespread, light to moderate, rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning is likely over Konkan and Goa during the next 5 days and over Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada during the next 24 hours.

Further, fairly widespread to widespread, light to moderate, rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning is predicted over Karnataka, Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during the next 5 days.
