Naomi Osaka may have bowed out of the US Open, but the fashion moments she served up throughout the tournament are still having their moment in the spotlight. Osaka opened her US Open fashion campaign with perhaps the most personal look of the lot, a tribute to basketball legend Allen Iverson.
For her first-round match against Anastasia Zakharova, she walked out in a custom Who Decides War ensemble consisting of a dramatic grey hooded robe and a long white tulle skirt. The robe was covered with sewn-in newspaper clippings highlighting moments from Osaka’s own career.
And then came the Iverson details. Osaka wore her hair in cornrows and sported a red headband, echoing the Philadelphia 76ers legend’s unmistakable look during his NBA years. Her Nike playing kit underneath continued the basketball theme, with net-like detailing around the skirt.
The connection wasn’t accidental. Nike’s US Open athlete kits this season were inspired by basketball, giving Osaka the perfect excuse to bring one of the sport’s biggest style icons into her own tennis wardrobe.
September 3: Thom Browne brings the drama in white
If Day One was basketball swagger, Day Two was polished tennis couture. For her second-round match against Katerina Siniakova, Osaka arrived in an all-white Thom Browne look that managed to make traditional tennis whites look anything but traditional.
The outer layer was a flowing white silk-gazar coat, finished with matching belts and embroidered with tiny tennis rackets. A dramatic train and mesh elements added movement as Osaka walked onto court. Underneath, she revealed a shimmering silver two-piece Nike kit.
The look also had a little bit of fashion déjà vu. With Law Roach behind the styling and those tiny tennis-racket details, the ensemble immediately invited comparisons with the tennis-inspired fashion world he helped create around Zendaya for ‘Challengers’.
September 5: Business in the front, tennis on the court
By September 5, Osaka appeared ready to get down to business. For her third-round match against Elise Mertens, she switched designers and silhouettes, stepping out in MONSE.
The look combined an oversized grey suit jacket with a hoodie, paired with wide-leg grey trousers and a black-and-silver Nike kit underneath.
It was essentially boardroom meets courtside. After two looks built around long, dramatic silhouettes, the Monse ensemble brought a more relaxed, streetwear-inspired energy while still keeping the theatricality intact.
Osaka even captioned the mood herself with a simple message: “back to business.”
And honestly, the outfit understood the assignment.
September 7: Going out with a KidSuper bang
And then, for the final chapter, Osaka went maximalist. Before facing Elena Rybakina in the fourth round, she arrived in a spectacular KidSuper coat designed by Brooklyn-based designer Colm Dillane.
The colourful, fur-trimmed coat featured a bold laundromat scene and a long, dramatic silhouette because apparently Osaka’s wardrobe had decided that subtle exits were not an option. There was another clever basketball reference, too. Her headband echoed the familiar red, white and blue NBA logo, except this version replaced the basketball player with a tennis player.
After the match, Osaka admitted that she felt “swaggy” in the look and said it embodied New York.
Unfortunately for Osaka, this was also her final appearance at this year’s tournament.
Rybakina defeated her in straight sets, ending Osaka’s singles run in the fourth round. But if she had to go out, at least she went out looking like the main character.

So yes, Naomi Osaka is out of the US Open. But between the newspaper robe, the tennis-racket embroidery, the deconstructed suit and that glorious KidSuper coat, she managed to turn four rounds of tennis into four separate fashion events.
