RBI MPC Meeting 2026 Live Updates:The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Wednesday raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% from 5.25%, delivering the first rate hike since February 2023, in a unanimous decision by the Monetary Policy Committee, said RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra. The RBI has also shifted its policy stance from ‘neutral’ to ‘calibrated tightening’, signalling a stronger focus on containing inflation while maintaining macroeconomic stability.

Malhotra said India’s economy has been strong, with the economic activity momentum remaining broad-based. He also added that the Indian economy is expected to remain resilient.

The RBI also raised its real GDP growth forecast for FY27 to 7.1%, signalling continued confidence in the strength of the domestic economy despite global uncertainties. The projection is higher than the 6.7% forecast in the August policy.

The RBI’s decision comes amid rising inflationary pressures, elevated crude oil prices, global economic uncertainty and pressure on the Indian rupee. At the same time, the domestic economy remains resilient, giving the central bank room to prioritise price stability.

For borrowers, today’s 25-bps hike might mean higher interest rates on floating-rate loans, including home loans, depending on how banks transmit the increase. For savers, higher interest rates could eventually support FD returns.
