The start of the service in Meerut City will ease the journey for those travelling towards Ghaziabad and Delhi

The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) will be throwing open the Meerut South station on the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) project from Sunday, an official statement announced on Saturday.

The station, to be the first in Meerut, will be opened for passenger operation from 2pm on Sunday.

So far, the Namo Bharat train services were operational only in Ghaziabad until Modi Nagar North. Now, the start of the service in Meerut City will ease the journey for those travelling towards Ghaziabad and Delhi. These people will find it easier and faster to travel to their destinations. It will also help those who travel to Meerut for work or education from Ghaziabad or Delhi.

Meerut South will be the next stop after Modi Nagar North.

“The Meerut South RRTS station will open for passenger operations from tomorrow at 2 PM. With the addition of this eight km section, a total of 42 km of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor is now operational, including nine stations from Sahibabad in Ghaziabad to Meerut South in Meerut,” the statement added.

The RRTS started operations in October 2023 in a small section in Ghaziabad. The 17-km stretch was between Sahibabad and Duhai Depot in Ghaziabad. It was further extended in March. At least 22 lakh passengers have travelled in the service so far.

The entire section of the corridor, between Delhi and Meerut, will have 25 stations.

So far, a 34-km section of this corridor is operational in Ghaziabad for the public with eight RRTS stations connecting Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Guldhar, Duhai, Duhai Depot, Murad Nagar, Modi Nagar South, and Modi Nagar North. The NCRTC is expecting to complete the entire stretch between Delhi and Meerut by June 2025.

Out of the total length of 82 km, Uttar Pradesh accounts for 68 km.

Modipuram and Modipuram Depot are the last stoppages of the RRTS in Meerut as of the current plan from Delhi.

The RRTS will enter Delhi from Anand Vihar, which will be the next stop after Sahibabad. In Delhi, RRTS will have stoppages at New Ashok Nagar, Sarai Kale Khan, and Jangpura.

Once the full stretch is completed, the distance between Meerut and the national capital can be covered in less than one hour. It will not only ease the lives of daily commuters but also help in controlling air pollution. The service is expected to take more than one lakh private vehicles off the road.
