Star women’s doubles shuttlers Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand Pullela on Friday became just the second Indian players in the discipline to win a BWF World Championships medal, 15 years after Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa’s bronze-medal win.
Treesa and Gayatri, on the comeback trail after the former returned from injury, battled for one hour and nine minutes to defeat China’s Jia Yi Fan and Zhang Shu Xian 16-21, 21-15, 21-13 and storm into the semifinals, bagging at least a bronze medal.
India last won a BWF World Championships medal in women’s doubles in 2011, when Jwala and Ashwini won the bronze in London.
